Take Just Photos and Trash
by John Stokes
Welcome to 100 percent pure New Zealand.
New Zealand is marketed the world over as clean and green, and it takes a brave soul to call that into question. Seasoned travellers from other parts of our globe are in awe of the natural and un-spoilt beauty that makes New Zealand what it is. Indeed, for many that is what attracted them to come here. Similarly, when kiwis travel to other parts of our world, we understand better the natural beauty that makes up our homeland.
But to keep New Zealand natural and un-spoilt takes effort.
I remember years ago, in Australia, the catchy song and advertising campaign called “Do the Right Thing”. Very simply, it encouraged the use of rubbish bins! I’m quite sure Tourist Times readers don’t need a reminder to perform such a fundamental task but, sadly, a miniscule proportion amongst us does. And, as we all know, not disposing of our trash correctly can spoilt it for all.
That is why Tourist Times applauds the latest initiative of the Tourism Industry Association, which is aimed at the freedom camper.
A so-called freedom camper is one who chooses to pitch a tent, or park a caravan or motor home for the night, outside a recognised camp ground. It is marvellous that many areas welcome such campers. But others complain bitterly about it, because of the “leftovers”. There are no nationwide rules and regulations governing this activity, and nor do I think we want them. However, already some local Council regulations and by-laws do restrict freedom camping.
The Tourist Industry Association now has developed a nationally-recognised sign which may be erected in places where freedom camping is definitely a no-no. But, as we all want to keep New Zealand looking clean and green and pure, we really do not want these signs spaced every ten metres at every beach or river! So just because there isn’t a sign doesn’t mean it’s ok! And that’s why the prospective freedom campers are now encouraged to first “ASK A LOCAL”.
But, understandably, the locals simply might not know either! However, the local information centre will, and so will the local Council and Department of Conservation office. And freedom campers can also ask their vehicle hire company for advice about this too.
The advice will all be the same.
Remember the scouts – be prepared! Please take bags for recycling and trash. Camping the New Zealand way is not using the bush as a toilet – perish the thought! So, if there is no public toilet nearby, you’ll need bags or containers for ALL your waste!
So enjoy, but please do the right thing and leave the area unblemished for the next people to enjoy.
The old adage applies – take just photos and trash.
